Responsible Tourism grade for houseboats to be launched in Kerala

The Pallathuruthy Responsible Tourism (RT) Initiative is all set to enter the next level with the State government planning to introduce RT classification for houseboats in the Vembanad lake.

The move is part of the State RT Mission’s effort to implement a more effective mechanism to do away with the tonnes of waste generated in houseboats. “Waste collection and management is now being undertaken in a major way in the region as part of the RT initiative. RT classification for houseboats is the next level. It will focus on managing waste in a more effective manner. As part of it, houseboats involved in waste management will be promoted by the Tourism Department,” said, Rupesh Kumar, coordinator, Responsible Tourism Mission.

Mr. Kumar said houseboat owners and staff would be provided training on scientific waste management. An awareness campaign for tourists and local communities will also be carried out with an aim to protect the backwaters, he said.
